A few weeks ago we went to Maui, Hawaii with Scott & Sandee and friends. We had a great time. While there we saw a sign that read, "the perfect place to waste precious time." We enjoyed many activities such as a sunset dinner cruise, zip-line, snorkeling with turtles, hawaiian luau, beach and pool time, great weather, beautiful scenery, and most importantly spending quality time with great friends.
Tyler wanted to enter the science fair this year and I was totally against it. Last year we ended up making the posters and projects the night before they were due and it was mostly me doing the work. I don't think I ever did the science fair as a kid. I HATE them. So the deal was, Jason and I were not helping what so ever. I thought it would convince her not to participate. Dawson had no desire to do it. I was so happy for that. Tyler decided on her project and I just sat back and let her do it. She had this crazy idea of putting apples in bags with different liquids and see what happened and if she could keep them from going brown. She did just that. I had her keep everything in her room so I didn't have to see it on the counter every day. A few days before it was due she asked to use my computer and she typed out her discovery and drew a graph and I did help her by checking things over to make sure she had all the requirements done. As she took her board to school I sweetly reminded her not to forget that she completed this project all on her own, most kids have parents that will do it for them. She chould be proud of what she had done, but not to expect the blue ribbon. As she came home that afternoon she was all smiles. She told me that she had WON! I have to admit at first I didn't believe her but Dawson was there to verify that it was no joke. I was so proud of her. She actually went on to compete at the district level but didn't win. She was okay with that she thought it was quite boring sitting and waiting for 4 hours to have judges to come ask you 7 questions. It was a great experience for her.
Tyler had a assignment a few months ago in school to write an essay about a pioneer relative. The assignment was required and the essays were being turned in to the Son's of the Utah Pioneers and they were going to be judged. The winners would be awarded 20 gold dollars. Their essay would be published on the Son's of the Utah Pioneers website. Tyler took on this challenge and was very determined to win. With the help of my mom I found a book that my grandma had given me about my grandfather's grandfather. I told Tyler that because it was a assignment for school she need to complete it on her own. She loved reading about Warren Stone Snow and finding out how he helped Joseph Smith. Her essay only had to be 500 words and it ended up 1100. She did a great job. She turned it in and I forgot about the Son's of the Utah Pioneers judging them. I received a phone call from one of it's members telling me that Tyler's essay was chosen as one of the five winners from her grade in our school. We kept it a secret from her until the morning of the assembly at school. Even then we didn't tell her she was getting the money. We had just told her she was a finalist and that is all we knew. This girl is all about the money! She was very excited. We are very proud of her and her accomplishment.
